Fractional CIO

The concept of Fractional CxO is becoming fairly common in the US market, most typically with CFOs, and is now becoming more popular in the UK.

The concept is in some ways similar to a business taking on a Non-Exec Director, where the business is looking to get regular access to advice and thinking on a particular them of importance to the business.

The key difference between Non-Exec work and bringing on a Fractional CxO is that someone in a Fractional role can take on work in the business with other leaders, most often joining projects.

In the case of a Fractional CIO, a business might need to get the advice and support from an experienced CIO from time to time, maybe at the start of a large programme of change, maybe during an RFP process or during an M&A process – but not need to have someone of that experience level or cost as part of the organisation more permanently.

Businesses looking for this type of advice often turn to consulting organisations for that work but that is typically very expensive and normally comes as a “team solution” as opposed to getting some solid time from an experienced executive.
